Wave goodbye to gas, insurance, maintenance and parking fees as you say “Hello!” to convenient electric vehicle access with no strings attached.
BlueLA is a revolutionary 100% electric vehicle (EV) service with locations already in Paris, London, Indianapolis, Singapore, Torino (Italy) and now it will be coming Los Angeles. This membership-based subscription service offers access to a network of shared electric vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at self-service locations throughout the central city of Los Angeles.
The BlueLA Electric Car Sharing Program will provide 100 electric cars and 200 electric vehicles charging points in 2018 to service the following communities: Chinatown, Boyle Heights Westlake, Pico-Union, Koreatown, Echo Park and Downtown Los Angeles.
BlueLA has partnered with the City of Los Angeles to pilot the nation’s largest electric vehicle car sharing program for disadvantaged communities to meet Angelinos’ evolving mobility needs while bringing sustainable transportation options to low-income neighborhoods. Extensive research was done to identify which communities are the most affected by these issues, and the car sharing program locations were chosen accordingly.
This all started in 2015, when The City of Los Angeles was awarded 1.7 million dollars from the California Air Resources Board through California Climate Investments (CCI) to pilot BlueLA. The company is a partnership between Blue Solutions, a division of the Bollore group of France, and the L.A. Department of Transportation. As we witness the environmental and health effects of global warming and pollution, state lawmakers have been pushing Californians to consider zero-emission vehicles such as hybrids and electric cars. The unfortunate reality is that “going green” can be especially difficult for low-income families who are less likely to be private owners of a vehicle. BlueLA’s focus on disadvantaged neighborhoods and the accessibility of low-emission technology makes it unique from other car-sharing services in the country.
BlueLA stations will be on-street, consisting of one self-service kiosk and four to five parking spots, each with an electric charger. The service operates from one point to another so users will avoid the inconvenience of returning the car to the initial pick-up kiosk.
The BlueLA car can go up to 125 miles when fully charged, and it seats four adults comfortably. The costs of memberships will absolutely be affordable and consider the financial situations of those who benefit most from the program’s use.
Costs will vary, depending on which membership level is chosen, what discounts you qualify for, and how much time you use the car. Membership fees will range from $0 to $10 per month, and usage fees will range from $0.15 to $0.50 per minute of drive time.
Low-income users will be able to qualify for a 25-80% discount. Depending on an individual’s income, a 25% rebate will be available for those who pay by the minute, and a 40% discount may be applied to the monthly subscription fee. In addition, the 2 hours are free the first time a car is rented
With the introduction of BlueLA, we can look towards a future of a cleaner, healthier, and happier Los Angeles!
